AIESEC - Change Tomorrow Today
Good morning to everyone here today. Before I begin my speech, would
anyone here volunteer to drink this bottle of 5.5 litre of water for
RM1 before my speech ends? Now, I would like to ask a few questions. How
do you normally spend your holidays or free time? Do you work part-time
at some store or laze around the computer? Maybe spend your holidays
overseas or sleeping for fun? What if I told you that someone your age is leading the change needed in society at an international level or
attending leadership conferences in foreign countries? What if I told
you that you could do all these too and have the upper hand compared to
all your other friends before you even graduate? Today, I am going to
persuade you, beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen to join AIESEC to
be global people, to change the world and to get experience and skills
that matter today.
After my SPM, I was your typical average girl lazing around using the computer during my holidays. I was unlike those of you who worked part time. I was lazier and practically sat at home just facing my computer screen or television screen. But, that all changed. I became more active with better social skills; my network of global friends increased in size and became part of a culturally-diverse team. Now, how can you do that too? Ever since Miss Kalai told our class about Assignment 1, I have been asking around INTI whether they knew about AIESEC or any organizations that can benefit one in the future. So far, only 1 person said they knew about AIESEC.
AIESEC is a global, non-political, independent, not-for-profit organization run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. AIESEC does not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, gender, sexual orientation, creed, religion, national, ethnic or social origin. Present in over 110 countries and territories and with over 60,000 members, AIESEC is the world's largest student-run organisation. Focused on providing a platform for youth leadership development, AIESEC offers young people the opportunity to be global citizens, to change the world, and to get experience and skills that matter today.
Firstly, you can become a global citizen by joining AIESEC. Unlike other organizations, AIESEC offers an exchange program known as Global Community Development Program (GCDP). It is an exchange program with two-way benefits; you go there to learn something while giving something in return. For example, you go to Poland to teach English to children who do not have the money to go to public schools. Over there, you will adapt to your adopted family’s culture and view the world from their eyes. From that moment onward, you are a global citizen as you travel the world through this program. By crossing borders of the world, you are changing lives; including your own. The rewards you gained are infinity; from an eye-opening experience to sentimental values such as tolerance and confidence.
Secondly, being an AIESECer means stepping out of your comfort zone and changing the world. Our members are interested in world issues, leadership and management, such as the current dilemmas in the world today. A greener environment, the problem of HIV/AIDS and the future of the children in the form of international conferences or local workshops are just few of the examples that AIESECers are made aware of and called to help. By joining, you will not only get to be involved with your passions, but to also change the world. For example, you have a passion for Mother Nature. Why not join the Act Green Carnival at Sunway Pyramid on 22nd April 2012? This is an actual event by AIESEC University Putra Malaysia.
Lastly, AIESEC itself offers you many benefits and opportunities to get the experience and skills that matters today. Not only will your AIESEC experience beautify your resume, but you will also be chosen first and fired last by many companies in the future. In fact, it is a widely known fact that in every company around the world, ex-AIESECers are leaders in their respective fields because they gain important, dynamic, hands-on skills for their career during their journey in AIESEC. Therefore, it can be concluded that the courses in AIESEC develops leaders and people with better personalities, even when you are not a natural leader. For example, what does it mean to be a leader? Are your leadership skills a boss’s or a leader’s? By joining AIESEC, you are leaving a path for others to follow.
At the end of the day, AIESEC change people’s lives. Every day, AIESECers out there are demonstrating how they are active leaders making a positive contribution to society. Whether it is the present, the future or about HIV/AIDS, AIESEC is your best choice to survive in this dog-eat-dog world. Do you still remember the water bottle at the start of my speech? If you open the RM1, there is a RM50 note inside. Similarly, AIESEC can give you leadership opportunities but it is your choice to say that you want it before someone else takes it instead. After all, you will never know what you will get until you tried.
